The Triptych Series are collages that continue my work exploring stripes. I have experimented with new images and materials. While the collage process can provide happy accidents, I feel a need to build onto the chance combination of elements and develop them more consciously into new visual ideas. I do this by recognizing what’s distinctive in an "accidental" composition and what’s worth repeating. I like to reproduce the parts that are interesting to me, and then continue to rework and refine those elements in subsequent compositions. I then go back and forth between multiple arrangements until I have developed a consistent and unique visual vocabulary. My last step is to integrate the three pieces by adjusting their order and orientation to present a unified whole. By creating three related compositions I am able to master my craft and achieve greater refinement of imagery. This is a way for me (or any artist) to develop a unique voice. |
