Stones of Resonance: TIBET
The powerful and serene Buddhist architecture of Tibet inspired these collages. They are based on photographs I took while visiting the Lhasa region in 2011.
At the Sera Monastery I focused on the simpler, more humble buildings housing the monks rather than on the elaborately decorated temples now being restored. I was drawn to the massive sloping walls of the structures and small high windows shaded by pleated awnings. I love the use of the traditional lime-wash covering the walls in white and/or red.
I cropped and tore areas of my photos adding pieces of my alcohol infused papers that blended with natural building materials of stone, clay, and wood. I added blue papers to refer to the luminous sky and incredibly bright light at the 12,000 feet elevation.
